DPRK marks army anniversary with missile show

PYONGYANG, April 25 (Xinhua) -- The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) on Wednesday launched a massive military parade here with 48 missiles demonstrated to celebrate the 75th anniversary of its army.

DPRK top leader Kim Jong-il watched the one-hour parade with top legislator Kim Yong-nam and other senior military officers of the Korean People's Army (KPA).

The parade were attended by more than 100,000 people, and it is the first time for the nation to show 48 missiles of four different types since 1998.

"Due to the hostile policy imposed by the United States, we will defend our country's sovereignty with high alert," said Kim Kyok-sik, chief of the General Staff of the KPA.

The last military parade was held in October 2005, marking the 60th anniversary of the ruling Workers' Party of Korea.
