PYONGYANG, June 5 (Xinhua) -- The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) Tuesday vowed to join efforts with the international community to combat global warming, major official media reports said.

"No country can be an exception in the work to protect the environment on the earth," said the leading official newspaper Rodong Sinmun on World Environment Day.

"The DPRK will conduct positive work for environmental protection and maintain close contact with international organizations in the future," Rodong Sinmun said.

The Korean Central News Agency quoted a government official as saying that the country has been suffering from the rising global temperature in recent years.

Jong Hyong-il, a department director at the Ministry of Land and Environment Preservation, said the DPRK has taken a series of measures to protect the environment, including the utilization of regenerated energy and improvement of the efficiency of solar batteries.

The DPRK has signed the Kyoto Protocol and the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer.

Also Tuesday, Minju Jonson, a Cabinet newspaper, described global warming as "the most serious worldwide problem at present."

For Environment Day, the DPRK also held a scientific symposium and a national seminar on global warming and staged an exhibition to raise social awareness of the issue.
