PYONGYANG, Sept. 5 (Xinhua) -- The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) is prevailed with a happy atmosphere with people busy preparing for the country's 60th national birthday which falls on Sept. 9.

A series of exhibitions kicked off one after another marking the 60th anniversary of the founding of the DPRK. Exhibitions on stamps, books and arts revealed the course the country has followed in the past 60 years.

Among them, a national exhibition on industrial designs displayed thousands of inventions and designs that were "helpful in promoting the development of the national economy and improving people's standard of living."

Various cultural activities, including art performances, lectures and film shows, were staged nationwide, through which people expressed their deep love for their leaders.

The mass gymnastic performance "Arirang" that was on show at the May Day Stadium of Pyongyang added a festival atmosphere to the capital ahead of the national day.

The capital took on a new look with many buildings painted and renovated. More than 20 streets were reconstructed and some sidewalks were paved with colorful stones.

People were busy preparing for the national day ceremony. Tens of thousands of students gathered every day to train for the national day parade.

The DPRK government attached great importance to the 60th anniversary of the founding of the country. It called on the people to welcome the national day "with political enthusiasm and glorious achievements."

At least 60,000 main construction projects have been completed in the DPRK over the past more than one decade, including power stations, pig farms and steel furnaces, the official KCNA news agency reported.

The 60th anniversary should be a "grand political ceremony," said an editorial carried by the official Rodong Sinmun. The ceremony should fully demonstrate the spirit of the DPRK people to build a powerful and prosperous country, it added.

It also called on the people to actively participate in celebration activities as it will boost the national pride and confidence and turn out to be a 'victorious' ceremony.
